Building A Website Does NOT
Make You A Webmaster!
So you learned something new and you built a website. Good for you, you entered the 21st. century! It's a step forward but hold the topping on the cake because now, as a website owner, you have to learn SO much more that it will drive you nutso!
It takes YEARS to learn how to build an EFFECTIVE website that not only looks good, but will work in your marketplace. What do you know about marketing online? Not much is what most people will say. If you don't know about your online marketplace how did you optimize that snazzy website to compete?
How did you choose your main keywords and key phrases? You did do that, didn't you... if not, go back further still, all the way to the library. Find out what marketplace your business falls in and study that industry first. THEN, go online and study the marketplace there.
The next step is to go back to the beginning...
So, you have a website that is listed in the main search engine on page 244 along with 100,000 other website owners who knew about as much as you did, when you built your website.
Where you need to be is on page one, eh? SO, go look at page one, look at each and every website on that page. Do you know how to look at the code for those sites with just a mouse click? It's easy, but as a novice, you may not know... just right click on the page. When the menu comes up click on something that might say, "view page source." IF you can read the code enough to find the keywords/phrases and description, you are ahead of tens of thousands of people.
Study what these websites have done to get on page one as far as their code is concerned. See that they use H1, H2 and H3 tags; that their keywords and key phrases match page titles, directory names, page names and page content text. There is actually much more but this is a place to start finding out what you did wrong or what you did right.
Get a clue before you get a website.
IF you do not know how to go about planning a business offline, you certainly know even less about planning to take that business online. No, this is not a "self-help" article by any means or stretch of the imagination.
IF you went to one of those sites where you "build" your own site with a template and fill in the blanks you know even less than the novice who managed to build his own site with some software that probably took him a year (or more) to master. You are not a webmaster.
IF you got a free domain and have free hosting your website is the same as SPAM, of no use whatsoever. You are not a webmaster.
IF you have a CMS that someone set up for you and the description still says "Joomla! - the dynamic portal engine and content management system" you are certainly NOT a webmaster.
IF you read an article that said you only need to have some word on a page once to get that page on Google page one, you are an idiot and also NOT a webmaster.
IF you took over a website from someone who said they made a lot of money with it so it must by YOUR fault that you are not making money, you are also an idiot and NOT a webmaster.
IF you think a WordPress Blog is a website, you are not a webmaster and STILL do not have a website.
IF you blog everyday and think your content will get your blog on page one of Google and you might get a real job with that, DO I have to say it? NO, you are not a webmaster and what's more, you are still an idiot.
IF you own more than one website that someone else built for you and none of them is helping your offline business, you hired the wrong company to build your websites! Just because you own them, does not make you a webmaster and if you are still paying someone for the hosting and maintenance, you are also an idiot.
IF you don't know the difference between a wiki and a website, you will never be a webmaster.
How does a real business owner find a web developer and web designer who knows what a webmaster really is?
This is not as hard as you might think. A webmaster will tell you that you will probably never be able to be your own webmaster if you have a business to run. Why is that? Because becoming a real webmaster does take years to learn. Study and work in the field on numerous websites is what it takes to even know what a real webmaster does on a daily basis.
IF you are looking for a developer/designer, be sure to ask them what webmaster services they offer to go along with the website. IF they tell you they will teach you to handle your own website, DO NOT HIRE THEM. You should have no need to learn to run a website under any circumstances. Your web developer should have someone on staff to run, maintain, update, troubleshoot, check uptime/downtown of your website each and every day.
Any development company should be able and willing to serve you and offer webmaster duties upon the completion of a website's development, design and launch.
Webmaster duties include:
- Traffic analysis.
- Website tweaking to stay competitive in your marketplace.
- Keep current with Google changes.
- Be prepared to work whatever problems your site might have with Google updates.
- Monitor new sites that come into your marketplace.
- Monitor pages as to where visitors are spending their time at your site.
- Update pages on a regular basis as needed.
...and much more. You would never be able to learn all there is to know if you need to run a business! Hiring a great development company is your best bet!
Steer away from your sister-in-laws first husband who built his own website and your second cousin who managed to build a CMS website...
Get a clue - Get a Pro! - Get and stay happy knowing you have a real webmaster at the wheel of your online marketing endeavors!
